{"id":1514,"date":"2010-03-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bp.rajeshkurikayar.co.uk\/?page_id=1514"},"modified":"2019-11-28T08:30:51","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T13:30:51","slug":"groupthink-and-implications-designing-your-customer-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beyondphilosophy.com\/groupthink-and-implications-designing-your-customer-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Groupthink and implications for designing your Customer Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Groupthink and implications for designing your Customer Experience&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>People in groups invariably produce poor decisions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Numerous studies documented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/2009\/08\/why-groups-fail-to-share-information-effectively.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> have found that when groups meet up to make a decision, people generally share information that the majority of the group already knows \u2013 rarely does anyone bring anything new ideas or insights to the table. Participants have been found to keep group information more top of mind, are concerned about social hierarchies and most likely enter the meeting with a prejudgement on how they see the outcome or proposition.<\/p>\n<p>All three of these influences stagnate any productive novel thoughts. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/2009\/08\/why-groups-fail-to-share-information-effectively.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Psyblog<\/a> has written an extensive post on the subject, highlighting past studies documenting group failures, as well as some of the studies that have found how groups can share information more effectively (seen below).<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the attributes of groups that do tend to divulge more of that critical unshared information with each other (from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informaworld.com\/smpp\/urlmapping?request=\/openurl%3Fgenre%3Darticle%26doi%3D10.1080\/0363452042000299894%26magic%3Dcrossref||D404A21C5BB053405B1A640AFFD44AE3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wittenbaum et al., 2004<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<strong>Groups where members disagree and who display <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/2009\/07\/fighting-groupthink-with-dissent.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lessgroupthink<\/a> are more likely to share unpooled information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022When people are told to try and recall relevant information before the meeting, this makes them more likely to mention facts that only they know.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022Members of a group should be made aware of each other\u2019s expertise, so they know (broadly speaking) what everyone else knows.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022The longer meetings go on, the more likely that people will recall previously unshared information (unfortunately!).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022People are more likely to share if they have a higher status in the group. So to encourage lower status members to share, their expertise needs to be specifically acknowledged to the group.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When your organisation deals with any aspect of your <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondphilosophy.com\/customer-experience\/\">Customer Experience<\/a>, how often do you bring a new thought to the meeting? How often do you bring in a new customer perspective to the problem?
